English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Webster University is designed to help non-native speakers develop their English skills in an academic setting. Because Webster offers content-based ESL instruction, students undertake ESL classwork and classwork in content courses alongside American students. This way, ESL students learn how to interact with professors and student in a real academic setting while becoming accustomed to the linguistic rigors of undergraduate university work.

    About the Webster ESL Program

The ESL program at Webster University–St. Louis consists of two levels: Level 4 and Advanced/Bridge level. Level 4 is full-time ESL only. However, the ESL program in St. Louis uses a sustained content-based approach, which means that every ESL student in full program ESL attends an undergraduate content course. Assignments and skills-work in all levels of the ESL program reflect the topics and assignments of typical American university coursework, and for full program students, they specifically relate to the undergraduate content course assignments.

    What Our Students Say

“One of the benefits to coming to Webster is that there is a strong connection with the rest of the world, and therefore there are many international students at the St. Louis campus. In and outside of the classroom, we talk a lot. Hence, thanks to the ESL program, I have many friends from several countries. This is my favorite part of being an ESL student.”

Keisuke Kassai - Political Science major and ESL student

ESL is not only a program for language learning. It also helps students by guiding them in learning citation styles such as APA. Writing research papers or essays with APA writing style in my other classes became easy for me and helped me get excellent grades. I would highly recommend all students to enroll in an ESL course today, not only for the language learning but also to learn academic writing style standards with great teachers for better career success."
