Chancellor's Reflection: Entering Summer with Optimism, Confidence and Determination

May 29, 2020

As we close out Webster’s academic and fiscal years, we at Webster want to thank you for your support of our students, faculty and staff over the past year. Despite the unorthodox way we needed to work over the past few months, we rose to the challenge and made the best of this unusual situation. The Webster mission and core values endure, with your help.

While we have been physically separated, our Webster community has remained connected in new and novel ways. This includes a new series of informative podcasts featuring interviews and news from around our global campus network.

I invite you to listen to these podcasts to hear human interest stories, gain unique perspectives on the pandemic and learn more about how our campuses around the world are responding to working virtually. Links to all of the episodes can be found on the Webster University website along with an episode summary. Below are three interview summaries that give you an idea of the range of Webster voices in these podcasts.

  • On the May 8th Webster World Report podcast we featured a fascinating interview with Vietnamese photojournalism student Phuong Bui of Webster’s School of Communications. Phuong spent 23 -days in quarantine after returning home on the last flight into Vietnam before the airport was closed.
  • The April 24th Webster World Report podcast includes Prof. Franco Algieri, Chair of the International Relations Department at Webster Vienna. He talks about the many unknowns that the future may bring as a result of the global pandemic and what the “new normal” post-pandemic may look like.
  • Also on the May 8th Webster World Report podcast is a conversation with Erica Ellard, Director of the Webster University Reeg Academic Resource Center, at the main campus in Webster Groves. Erica talks about the seamless transition the Reeg ARC made to completely virtual coaching support for writing and tutoring students worldwide.

We enter the summer of 2020 with confidence born of our commitment to providing Webster students with an excellent education. We move forward with determination and the resolve of a strong, mutually supportive community. I will reach out to you in the coming summer months to keep you updated on our plans. Stay safe and well. We are grateful to each of you.
