Webster University’s Study Abroad Program Ranked Among Best in the Nation

University also lauded for high percentage of international students

ST. LOUIS (AUG. 13, 2014) - Webster University’s study abroad programs were recognized as among the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report in its “America’s Best Colleges” 2015 edition, released last month. The ranking was established through a survey of higher education administrators in the United States.

U.S. News and World Report also listed Webster as a regional mid-western University with one of the highest percentages of international students among its student body.

“This ranking confirms that Webster University’s comprehensive approach to global education is widely recognized among our peers as a mark of academic excellence,” said Webster University President Elizabeth (Beth) J. Stroble. “Our longtime commitment to global study and our focus on global citizenship is preparing our students for an increasingly international world, and we are grateful for the recognition for our programs throughout the United States and around the world.”

According to the editors of the “America’s Best Colleges” report, college presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students and deans of admissions from more than 1,500 schools nominated up to 10 institutions with stellar examples of study abroad programs.

The 30 institutions with the most nominations were listed in the guide, but were not ranked. They appear in alphabetical order at http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/study-abroad-programs. This is not Webster University’s first time on the list. Webster was named in 2011 and 2012, the last time the survey was conducted.

Besides study abroad, Webster University was recognized in this year’s report as having one of the highest percentages of international students among all universities in the Midwest region. With 2 percent of all students coming from a country other than the United States, Webster was ranked 64th among the top 100. The full list can be found at http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/most-international?src=stats.

According to U.S. News and World report, “International students can add diversity to a college or university, enriching the experience of other students on campus. Schools with a strong global presence often have a wealth of cultural groups and events, allowing international students an opportunity to share their food, music and traditions with their U.S. peers. International students … also benefit from a large foreign community when trying to acclimate to American life.”

“Receiving an international education doesn’t just mean stepping foot on foreign soil and declaring yourself international; rather it requires the students to immerse themselves into other cultures and explore the similarities and differences with their native culture,” said Julian Schuster, Webster’s provost, senior vice president and chief operating officer. “With a high percentage of our students coming from outside the United States, this learning extends into all levels of our programs, exposing all of our students to a global education, not just those who study abroad.”

Webster University also made several other U.S. News lists, including:

  • Best College for Veterans – ranked 11th
  • A+ Schools for B Students – listed in top 20
  • Highest Proportion of Classes with Fewer than 20 Students – ranked 2nd
